Your Name Is High Above All Names!

And those who know Your name will put their trust in You, for you LORD have never forsaken those who seek You. Psalm 9:10

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. John 14:13-14

When you pray do you know which of God’s names to use? Do you know what each of His names mean?

By understanding the names of God, you will have greater insight into who He really is! It will help you to know God more intimately. Using the different names of God appropriate to each situation will give you a more profound prayer time.

The names that were given in biblical times held special meanings. Each name given was particular to a situation, or held some kind of prophetic meaning as to their future plans or character. It held hope and dreams for their future. Sometimes it signified a particular situation taking place at the time of birth. In comparison we choose names many times that have family connections or are simply a name we like.

The names of God are rich in purpose and meaning. They tell of the character and actions of God. It is easy to have Faith in all circumstances when you see by His names that He always acts consistently with His character.

Because he loves me, says the LORD, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. Psalm 91:14

In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth Genesis 1:1

Elohim is the Hebrew translation of God which means omnipotent power; He who has absolute sovereignty over the universe.

When Abram was ninety-nine years old; The LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.” Genesis 17:1

El Shaddai is the Hebrew translation of God Almighty. El is the root of Elohim which refers to God’s mighty power. The word shaddai means breast and refers to God nourishing and sustaining us. El Shaddai then means that God is all powerful and able to meet our needs. When we have a need it is He who fulfills that need according to His will and in His time.

God said to Moses, I Am who I Am; this is what you are to say to the Israelites: I Am has sent me to you. Exodus 3:14

Yahweh was the translation for I AM but the ancient Hebrews changed the pronunciation to Jehovah. From Jehovah it has been translated into the English word LORD. The word LORD (Jehovah) refers to God’s eternal nature and His superiority over the heavens and the earth. God is always with us!

There the LORD made a decree and a law for them, and there be tested them. He said, If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.

Exodus 15:25-26

The LORD who heals you translated from English to Hebrew here is Jehovah-Rophe. God has the ultimate healing power. When you doubt and your Faith is low think about the following scriptures:

And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, “Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.” 3And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, “I will; be thou clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Matthew 8:2, 3

When the evening was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with His word, and healed all that were sick: 17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
Matthew 8:16, 17

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
Matthew 9:35

He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. Deuteronomy 32:4

Being called the Rock refers to God being our refuge and providing security for us. He is stable and never changing.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8

She gave her name to the LORD who spoke to her. “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” Genesis 16:13

El Roi is the Hebrew translation for God who sees. No matter where you are or what you need, God sees you and knows your needs. He loves you, He cares about your feelings and He is there for you. Lean on El Roi, He will guide you through even the toughest times in your life.

O LORD, God of Israel, there is not God like you in Heaven above or on earth below, you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue whole heartedly on your way. I Kings 8:23

The God of Israel is used to represent God’s sovereignty over the nation and His people. His people can count on Him to care for them under all circumstances.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord (Adonai) saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8

Adonai is translated from Hebrew to English. It means master or owner. And refers to God’s right to own and rule His creation. Even though He is our master, he has given us freedom of choice. It is up to us to make the right choices!

And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. Isaiah 9:6-7

The time to call on the Prince of Peace is when you are anxious, frightened, worried, stressed, and insecure as well as anytime you feel you are not at peace with your life or those around you

When you pass through the waters I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. The flames will not set you ablaze; for I am the LORD, your God, The Holy One of Israel, you’re Savior. Isaiah 43:2-3.

God is trustworthy, his word is good. He never fails His faithful. When God tells us He will do something then you can count on it! You can have faith in His word.

The LORD is the true God; He is the living God, the eternal King. When He is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure His wrath. Jeremiah 10:10

God is not like a graven image, impotent and lifeless. He lives and is omnipotent. He works miracles and His wrath can be felt. When all other things pass away, He will still live. He is everlasting.

For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd (Jehovah-Rohi) looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. Ezekiel 34:11-12

Just as the shepherd watches over his flock, he cares for them, keeps them safe from harm, sees that they have enough food and water, and keeps them on the right path, so will Jehovah Rohi do for you.

Then Daniel praised the God of Heaven and said; “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his” Daniel 2:19:20

The God of Heaven rules with all power and knowledge. It is he who we go to when we have questions that we need answer to. He holds the key to our past, present and future!

This is just a beginning; there are many more names of God. I will continue them on another Hub.

God’s revelation of Himself to us through His many names is a wonderful way that He has chosen to help build a relationship with us. I truly feel blessed to be researching God’s names and what they mean and sharing them with you. I pray this Hub will bless you too!

I really want to know God more and His character and knowing His names I am sure will help me understand even more just how AWESOME HE IS!!!!! (And to think that He is MY God the one and only true God!) Please pray that my trust in Him and Him alone will grow more and more as I get to know Him day by day. Did you know that "Abba" is one of His names? It means "Daddy"!!! This name has helped me soooo much to understand that I can come to Him as one of His little children. When I call Him that I feel as if He is looking at me and saying with open arms, Yes, come here my child and come sit on my lap and let's have time together. I truly am a "Daddy's Girl!" Joy
